Graduate Students

Dr. Hou is available to supervise graduate students in SFU Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology and PhD in Education.

Updated as of September 2026: Dr. Hou will be reviewing applications for the 2026 application cycle (Fall 2027 admissions).

Prospective students with an interest in the following areas of interests are encouraged to apply:

  • exploring how culture shapes the health and well-being of immigrant, racialized, or neurodivergent youth people and families.

  • creating and testing culturally responsive strategies to improve care experiences and engagement in care for young people with serious illnesses, such as eating disorders or cancer. 

  • inclusive education and culturally responsive pedagogy to cultivate inclusive learning experiences and support the health and well-being of diverse young people

Dr. Hou also welcomes inquiries from prospective graduate (MA, PhD) students in other areas within the Faculty of Education at SFU and related fields, where there is a strong alignment of research interests and subject to further discussion.

Undergraduate Students

We are currently accepting applications for undergraduate students to join our team starting January 2027 and onwards.

Students gain hands-on research experience at the intersection of clinical, cultural, and pediatric psychology, and contribute to ongoing projects focused on culture, child and youth health, and implementation science/knowledge mobilization.

Opportunities are available through volunteer research assistant positions, directed study at SFU (EDUC 490), work-study programs, BC Children’s Hospital Research Institute INSPIRE, and BC Children’s Hospital Research Institute summer studentships.

A minimum commitment of 8 hours per week is required, with availability during regular business hours at SFU’s Burnaby campus and occasionally at BC Children’s Hospital Research Institute.
