Dr. Sharon Hou recently co-authored a news article on factors related to health-related quality of life. Cho et al. (2025), published in the Journal of Clinical Psychology in Medical Settings, explored factors like demographics and caregiver distress on the health-related quality of life among infants and toddlers diagnosed with cancer. The findings highlighted the importance of interventions that focused on the caregiver-child relationship when health care providers assessed their well-being and provide any necessary support. During the SFU Faculty of Education Open House, Griffin Mawson represented the lab in warmly welcoming our community of colleagues, partners, and future educators. He showcased our ongoing research projects and engaged with visitors in conversations about our work. BC Children’s Hospital Research Institute Brain, Behaviour and Development Research Day

In the fall, members of our team took part in the BC Children’s Hospital Research Institute Brain, Behaviour and Development annual Research Day, where they had the opportunity to present the on-going projects they had been contributing to over the term. A huge congratulations to Gabi Zamma, Lara Vaziri, Sophia Guan, and Ryan Tom on showcasing their hard work and contributions to the lab!

SFU Faculty of Education Open House

As a fellow of DIVERT Mental Health, Dr. Sharon Hou attended the 3rd annual DIVERT meeting in Toronto, Ontario. Dr. Hou was part of a speakers panel entitled, “Favourite Failures and Stand-Out Successes: Journeys to get an Academic-Research Gig Post-Phd, and provided insights into her personal experiences and academic journey. DIVERT Mental Health: Inclusive Child & Youth Mental Health Training Symposium for the Digital Age

Dr. Sharon Hou presented a webinar titled: Easing Pain, Advancing Care: A New Pathway for Children with Severe Neurological Impairments at the Children’s Healthcare Canada. Dr. Hou and her fellow speakers shared more about the development of the Pain Pathway – a clinical tool that helps clinicians assess and manage pain to improve care for children and families. Children’s Healthcare Canada Webinar

Dr. Sharon Hou was awarded the Health Research Scholar Award (2026-2031) in support of her research to develop a culturally responsive strategy to advance child health equity. Summer Lab Social

This summer, members of our team took part in the BC Children’s Hospital Research Institute Summer Student Program, where they gained hands-on research experience and contributed to on-going projects in child health.

We were thrilled to celebrate their achievements during Poster Day, where trainees showcased the results of their summer research to peers, faculty, and staff. A big congratulations to Lara Vaziri, Gabi Zamma, and Lauren Chew for their hard work, dedication, and thoughtful contributions to our lab’s work over the summer!

BC Children’s Hospital Research Institute Summer Student Research Program and Poster Day

In collaboration with Dr. Fiona Schulte and the CARE4KIDS Lab, Dr. Sharon Hou recently co-authored three new articles in pediatric cancer survivorship.

Hou et al. (2025), published in JMIR Cancer, co-designed an mobile health (mHealth) intervention with young adult survivors and healthcare providers, identifying priority components to support better engagement in follow-up care. View article here.

Wright et al. (2025), in Current Oncology, applied the COM-B framework to examine barriers and enablers to long-term follow-up care among Canadian young adult survivors, highlighting the roles of motivation, opportunity, and capability in engagement to care. View article here.

Duong et al. (2025), in Cancer Medicine, explored how to engage under-represented adolescents and young adults in cancer research, emphasizing strategies that centre lived experiences and promote more inclusive participation. View article here.
